Guest Post: Independent News Local and Abroad, by Mikaela Nadeau

*One article in this issue of The Boston Broadside is from New Gloucester's own - Dorene Libby

It seems that independent news sources are thriving, and even getting aired on the realms of local news stations that have held the mantel of journalism for decades in Maine. From featured segments about New Gloucester's own NGXchange, to segments featuring The Maine Wire and the Maine Beacon, it's clear that independent news sources are growing and not leaving.

This is a result of the decline of American trust in the main stream media narrative on both sides of the aisle. Liberals that feel disenfranchised from the media, and conservatives that feel equally left out have now found outlets wherein independent journalism holds sway. In today's day and age it's no longer just through printed media, but the rise of social media and podcasts alike.

The positives that independent journalism have are that they are not beholden to corporate payouts, and other interested parties that want to push one agenda. Both liberal, independent, and conservative voices alike can now find sources of information that provides a place for readers and other members to go without feeling left behind.

Leave no doubt though, to be a free and independent thinker, you cannot just follow and listen to voices in the echo chamber of your own making. It's why it is imperative that to be educated in all things - especially the truth - that you listen and learn from both sides of the aisle. Doing so is the only way to bring clarity to subjects that many disagree on, and might actually garner more individuals to reach across the aisle with solutions instead of the consistent pandering and rhetoric that we've seen the past few years.
